The book is composed of child-friendly illustrations, quizzes, case studies and advice designed to help young readers better understand smart money management. In A Smart Girl's Guide to Money: How to Make It, Save it, And Spent It, American Girl offers a guide book about navigating finances. My only complaint is that it takes the "soft" view of making sure everyone feels comfortable with their money conversation instead of empowered. Girls especially want to know how to navigate the social conversation around money, and the book certainly addresses this. Holyoke covers how emotions as well family background all tie into the hows and whys of spending and saving money. The book really shines when it talks about spending habits. While it seems easy to walk a dog, it's a lot harder to understand how to market the business, schedule the business, keep track of money going in AND OUT (supplies as well as labor)and deal with the hiccups. The section on ideas to earn money clearly shows this book is geared for older girls (or those whose parents are willing to do just about everything for them). In these few words, kids might actually understand an oversimplified view on investments and how to participate in investing themselves. There's a brief section on investment at the end which is shockingly age-appropriate.

Libraries wanting to capture a wider audience may prefer Jeanne Kiefer's Jobs for Kids (2003) or Andrew Clements' fictional Lunch Money (2005).

Appended with a list of 101 moneymaking tips, this book is an engaging introduction to personal economics. The text is upbeat and informal, but although the information is appropriate to middle-school readers of both genders, the emphasis on clothing and makeup and the absence of boys in the illustrations are likely to deter male browsers. Most subjects are tackled on a generously illustrated double-page spread, which may incorporate tips, quotes, and a quiz intended to help kids discover their attitudes about money. Holyoke addresses topics such as feelings about money, launching a business, becoming a smart shopper, and investing. This new offering in American Girl's A Smart Girl's Guide series offers advice on earning, saving, and spending money.
